Memoria Pétrea, (Stone Memory) is a project of relocation of old slate slabs from the mid-nineteenth century (created in a traditional way from slate sheets hand-carved with shears, for the configuration of the roofs of the roofs), from ancient buildings in ruins , corrals of the Valls d'Aneu of the Catalan Pyrenees.
The objective of the project is to recover and give visibility to 6 different slabs that have been shaping their status through the passage of time. Objects whose historical journey began with the compression of old beds and the formation of metamorphic sheets of rock in the form of mountains, which the human being skillfully transformed into a tool for the construction of roofs and which, when they reach the end of their useful life, are recovered to generate a sound project that deepens in his memory. An acoustic tour through the use of contact microphones to extract the sounds and generate acoustic pieces through the passage of time that takes place on them, in their last location before being relocated and shown in the exhibition hall.
Memoria Pétrea was born around the memory of residual sound landscapes, those imperceptible sounds of the environment that are irrelevant to the human ear and record the environmental changes on different slate slabs of different constructions of the Catalan Pyrenees. Sounds that act as unique sound tracks or imprints, that are taken from the original space and transformed into delocalised pieces that reproduce the sounds recorded on them, forming a sound landscape.
The intervention consists in locating locations around the Pallars Sobirà region, and in the search for the best Slates (selected under acoustic quality, shape, size, thickness and type of slate), for the placement of microphones of contact under its lower part, directly connected to a frequency sampling software. During different days there will be a record of the different climatic elements such as the wind whipping the roofs, the rain hitting, the hail, the frosts or the snow. This series of vibrations, sounds in the form of pulses and resonances, will generate a sound file that will eventually lead to the composition of audible parts that end up being edited in the form of Tracks.
The Project will be presented in the form of a trip mapped by the same viewer, in which he will face the sounds that make up the journey with the objects that have created it, without the need to know their relationship. It will go through natural and artificial acoustic spaces at the same moment and enjoy the sonority of them by means of the abstraction of the space to which the objects belong by means of their delocalisation.
